America Has a Major Financial Literacy Problem
According to Forbes, overall, people want to make good financial decisions that set them up for success both today and in the future, but most never had the opportunity to learn how to do it. Case in point: two-thirds of American adults can’t pass a basic financial literacy test.
Here are four alarming stats that could be drastically improved with the right education.
The median out-of-pocket cost for an unexpected medical expense is $1,000, which means nearly half of our country is just one accident away from being hit with a bill they can’t afford to pay.
Tuition at public four-year institutions has increased by 213% in the past 30 years and nearly half of the 22 million Americans with federal student loans are either behind on payments or received permission to postpone payments due to economic hardship.
Students need a better understanding of what repayment plans look like after graduation so they can make educated decisions about the degrees they are seeking.
On average, they owe $16,048 with an APR of 16.47%.
That means if they took 10 years to pay off their full balance, they would hand over $16,695 in interest to their card issuer, or more than twice what they initially spent.
4) 33% of American adults have $0 saved for retirement.
Furthermore, 56% of American adults have less than $10,000 saved for retirement when you combine the 33% who have nothing saved with the 23% who have a small amount saved.

Gave awesome classes!
I’m an adult English as a foreign language for Hillsborough county. Tonya came to my class and gave great presentations on financial literacy and my students loved her! Thanks Tonya for providing useful information for new Floridian residents!
First Step…. Knowledge
I really appreciate Tonya for reaching out to me. Before speaking to her, I felt my goal was unattainable. After speaking with her about my future financial goals, I have hope. I know exactly where I am, and I know the next steps I need to take. It wasn’t only motivational but also very educational. The educational piece is what I appreciated the most as well as knowing the reality of my situation. I’m glad I took the first step.
Kappa League Financial Literacy
What a great session! The kids were engaged during the presentation. Best of all, they left with a better understanding of how the real world works related to personal finances.
Job Well Done!!
I commend TONYA WRIGHT for her financial expertise AND for sharing her time and talents with Kappa League of Tampa (FL), a mentoring group focused on the development of young men aged 12-18. TONYA helped our young men to understand the impact (and consequences) of financial planning, budgeting and saving. We will definitely be requesting her services in the future!
Entrepreneurship Program
As an aspiring entrepreneur, I found Ms. Tonya’s lessons highly effective and informative. The interactive learning activities presented provided insightful tips on how to plan for and execute a start-up business plan. Her lessons on financial literacy were also excellently delivered.
Leadership and Entrepreneurship Counseling
Ms. Wright helped me prepare for a very important business pitch contests for Tampa students while also teaching me about financial literacy. Her kindness and assertiveness never failed to inspire me to achieve greater goals for myself everyday.
Credit Literacy and Positive Usage
Where to begin!!! I have received soo much great information, working with Tonya. She has not only steered me in the right direction, but taught me how to stay on the path. Which is the most important thing by far. And the results are amazing. Thank you and I’m extremely grateful that I was able to get this far with your help and support.
Young Leadership Program Pitch Contest
I was taught by Ms.Tonya on financial literacy and business pitches. She is a wonderful teacher and broke down materials really well to a room full of young adults who now understand what it means to manage your money, Not only did she teach us but also treated us as family and showed that she really cared.
Financial Literacy/Credit Education
Omg…I learned so much about how to improve my credit from Ms. Tonya. She is transparent, open and honest. I felt save sharing my financial struggles and goals. I truly believe if I take the information and suggestions I learned, I will be in the 700s in no time. Thanks Ms. Tonya. I appreciate you!
First Time Home Buyer - Mortgage Process
Tonya is pleasant, relatable and full of knowledge. She broke down the Mortgage process, allowing me to ask questions and take notes so that as I progress on my journey to purchasing my first property, I feel confident in my decisions. If you are looking for someone to effectively motivate you through the home buying process, I highly recommend Tonya Wright.
